I think wet season's
come a bit earlier than usual this year, I don't remember having any real storms
of any intensity until at least December, but hey, if storms want to come in
the first week of November I can live with that. :)
I would've got radar, satellite and syntopic images for this but the lightning
was too close, I have antenna's on my roof for amateur radio and SES and I didn't
feel like having the extra chance of being hit by lightning so I unplugged all
my gear....power went out soon after anyway :P
(At least I know the UPS in my server holds up for half an hour or so, haha)
Update: 7th of
January, 2006, I asked BoM if they had any images from that morning, they kindly
sent me two Infrared Satellite images from 02:30 and 05:30, for those who don't
know, Broome is in the upper right hand square where that thicker/whiter cloud
is.
Todays storm is nothing like the
one we had in January this year, which had much more wind, much more electrical
activity and prolly dropped more rain in the short space of time, but today's
storm lasted for about three hours and the lightning kept going once the rain
had died off although at that point I was ready to go back to bed because as
much as I love storms, I hate working tired and work is usually busy when we've
had storms and a power failure !
These avi's are all taken from the relative safety of the small verandah at
the front and back of my 1st story flat, there was mostly sheet lightning which
is useless on a stills camera so I used movie mode on my Canon PowerShot A520.
The A520
is a still's camera, not designed for movies - the optical and audio sensors
aren't as sensitive to light as a real video camera and there's more lightning
and thunder going on than what's seen/heard in the footage.
Majority of noise on these avi's is rain, later when the rain dies down (in
the avi's closer to 14_LateForkRoll etc) you can hear some frogs and or steady
drizzle while the lightnings still happening as the storm travelled away from
us to the North West.
Wet season's here and when we have another early morning storm I want to be
prepared so I think I'll be buying a cheap camcorder or something, capture the
storm better !
File name's give a good idea of what to expect, the FILES ARE LARGE
and will take a while to download so be sure to DOWNLOAD THESE TO YOUR
OWN COMPUTER BEFORE YOU WATCH THEM or the buffering will suck !
Anyway, enough talking, here's the avi's - speakers are essential (stereo headphones
would be wicked for the thunder claps) ! :D
